Here is a very simple way to make an iPhone tripod mount for under $10. Suitable for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S with or without a case. (it would even suit a GoPro HD)
Using a girls “claw grip” hair product from your local supermarket (about $4)
Depending on the size of the clip to how much you need to modify. I needed to cut off all “fingers” of the clip except for the outer 4, 2 top and 2 bottom. This allowed the iphone to slide inside the clip and be held by the tension of the spring.
The photo above shows the most of the claws have been removed, next a quick clean up with sandpaper to take away any sharp edges.
Next was to cut a small piece of aluminium 50mm x 15mm (about 2 inches x 1/2 inch). 2 small holes were drilled, one to suit a “pop rivet” and the other for clearance for the tripod screw. Attach aluminium to clip with pop rivet and then using a 1/4″ x 20 nut attach to tripod of your choice. Shown here attached to the Joby gorillapod .
The spring tension holds the iPhone firmly, in a case or bare. It also makes removing the iPhone extremely quick.
All up took about 10 minutes to attach for a very simple, quick iPhone tripod mount, suitable for any model iphone, attached to the gorillapod makes a very nimble approach. Now off to test it out, photos and video coming next…
